The unknown Algarve

What if we told you that most of our beautiful country is still to be “discovered” by the people who visit us?
What if we told you that those are authentic, non-crowed areas, with so much to offer, and perfect to visit in a Covid world?
Over the next weeks, we will be showing you some of these areas, so, stay tuned!
This week we would like to tell you about the eastern side of the Algarve, where you can find the towns of Tavira, Vila Real de Santo António, Castro Marim, and Cacela Velha just to name a few.
Occupied since the time of the Phoenicians, this region was home to many civilizations and, still today, you can see Roman and Moorish vestiges. Visiting Vila Real de Santo António, you will learn about the great earthquake of 1755 that destroyed several cities in the country and how modern the reconstruction of this city was at the time. Nearby, you have quaint little towns such as Cacela Velha, pristine beaches, and almost private islands where you can spend the day, do birdwatching, sail, go fishing or discover the oyster production. You can also visit the salt marshes in Castro Marim and do a salt spa, or zipline between Portugal and Spain. Inland, you have the traditional town of Loulé where you can still see the craftsmen working and see them weaving the traditional baskets or hammering the “cataplana”, the copper pan where the typical dish of the region is cooked. It is called cataplana such as the pan and is a delicious fish stew with onions, tomatoes, bell peppers, … If you like cooking, then, you can’t miss a visit to the local market where our chef will help you choose the freshest products so you can cook your own cataplana!
But this is just to get you started!
