Westerns in Spain

Spaghetti westerns were a particularly popular western sub-genre created in the 1960s under the helm of an important director such as Sergio Leone. This Italian view of a quintessentially American genre has produced some of the world’s most famous films, like “A fistful of dollars”, “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” and the unforgettable “Django”. Because of its proximity to Italy and landscapes similar to those of the Mexican border, the Desert of Tabernas in Almería became home to most of these films, and even today you can visit the amazing Old West town set that is still in use.

Highlights

James Bond in Spain

Did you know that James Bond has called Spain home twice? In “The world is not enough”, the entire pre-credits scene was filmed in Bilbao, around the then-recently opened Guggenheim Museum. Later on in the film production moved to the Bárdenas Reales Desert in Navarra. The following film “Die Another Day” has Pierce Brosnan return to Spain, more specifically to the city of Cádiz, that was transformed into Havana, Cuba. The famous scene of the Bond girl Jinx (played by Hale Berry) comes out of the water and meets 007 for the first time.

Highlights

The industry

The Spanish film industry has established a significant foothold in the overall history of cinema, both for the quality of its cinema, but also for the steady production that it continues to have. We cannot forget the incredible actors that have come out of this country, many of them, Academy Award winners like Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem. Many of the Spanish films that have made to big screens worldwide have been creations of genius filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, and on this trip, you will have a chance to see some of the locations that have inspired the director.
