Discover the medieval town of Óbidos
Did you know the inhabitants of the walled city of Óbidos were known as "toupeiros" in the past? The town was besieged for eight months in the 13th century, during a war between King Sancho II and his brother's future King Afonso III. The inhabitants of Óbidos endured and survived this siege, as well as many others in centuries after. This led to the idea that there was a secret network of tunnels below the city, which allowed the inhabitants to sneak out like moles ("toupeiras" in Portuguese) and fetch supplies from the outside during sieges. There is still an establishment in Óbidos that sells a drink named "toupeiro" to honor this tradition.
